I’m a huge fan of the Chosen One universe of books and was looking forward to Achim’s story, but this left me disappointed. It’s as if it had been written with little knowledge of the books that had come before it. The plot was uninspired, and only seemed to serve as a bridge to the next spin-off. What I found most disturbing was the lack of involvement with previous books’ characters who would have been more suited to the challenges thrown at the hellhounds, like Henry; his absence was briefly noted but the reason for it was so lame. And even past characters who did show up were barely given any attention, as if the author couldn’t be bothered to flesh out the story. Too much emphasis was given to future storylines and new characters at the expense of the beloved ones I’ve stuck around for.And the supposed main characters of the book? I’m good with the fated mate trope, but these two did such a half-assed job of it that I couldn’t feel any chemistry between them. Banter and sex didn’t do it. There was more space dedicated to the precocious antics of child Ryan than to any actual conversations between Achim and Ozias; most communication between them was superficial or imagined in internal dialogue, and there was no real character or relationship development. I felt like they got the short shrift in order to move the story arc along.I’ve read previous books in this universe through KU first and then purchased them for my collection, but I won’t be doing it for this one. I didn’t buy Stop Kidding Around, either, because it wasn’t up to the level of earlier installments. I’ll give the spin-off series a try since I can borrow it through KU, but if it’s also a letdown, I’ll probably give up the hope for a return to what made this universe so special, and just reread the books I already have. *I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review*Achim and Ozias are perfect for each other. The magic in the Hellhound world and the earth realm is broken from the years of damage the Chosen One series is about. The Hellhound series continues the storyline and delves further into the magic and it finding a way to heal.This is where Achim and Ozias come in. They are mates, but more than that, Achim is Ozias's familiar, which is a new, yet ancient thing in Macy's world.The story is captivating as always, with some huge world reveals and some bittersweet sorrow and new joys.Achim and Ozias are hot, sexy, perfect for each other and really work well together. The big battle is nerve wracking and is what brings on some new things in the Macyverse world we all love.I loved this story and it will be a reread at least a few times to pick up on some of the more nuanced things you miss on the first read through.
